Dear Colleagues,

It is with mixed feelings that I share with you the news that Sergio Gonzalez, senior vice president of university advancement and external affairs, has been named the next senior vice president for advancement at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island; his last day at UM is July 31. After more than 15 years of superlative service to the University of Miami, Sergio will certainly be missed, but I am sure you will join me in congratulating him as he embarks on this next chapter of his outstanding career.

Over the years, Sergio has led all development, communications, community relations, and alumni relations activities at the University. His efforts in these areas contributed significantly to our progress as a top-tier institution. He was the architect and leader of the two Momentum capital campaigns that collectively raised more than $3 billion. Sergio was responsible for the implementation of the "U" mark as the university-wide visual brand, which is recognized as a national model for university rebranding. Among his other accomplishments were the creation of the University's first comprehensive parents program, a widely recognized donor stewardship effort, and a highly successful admissions legacy program.

Sergio has been deeply ingrained in our community, having filled a number of senior roles in key local private and public organizations, including the Dade County Homeless Trust, South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee, and Miami-Dade County Mayor's Office. He has been an active civic leader, serving in such key community institutions as the Orange Bowl Committee, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and Arsht Performing Arts Center Trust, and is well-known nationally as a member of the boards of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the National Council of La Raza.

A comprehensive search for Sergio's replacement will begin immediately. As part of this process, we will seek input from faculty, staff, trustees, and other members of the UM community.

Please join me in thanking Sergio for his many years of leadership and notable accomplishments. We wish him and his wife, Patricia, the very best.
