January 17, 2017

Dear University of Miami Family,

Welcome to a new semester and the new year. I know your talent, commitment, and curiosity will bring growth to the University of Miami in 2017 as well as to the many communities to which we each belong. Together our work has the potential to transform lives here and throughout the world.

This week in particular we join the nation in remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. His inspirational words and courageous actions challenged individuals to work together toward a more just society. One of my favorite quotes is one in which he powerfully described the interdependence that links every one of us to all our fellow human beings.

MLK Quote

Each of us helps to "weave" our single garment of destiny each day. You can play an important role in the life of this institution by participating in activities that help us understand, respect, and celebrate our unique perspectives and our common dreams. Many campus groups convene events throughout the year that can strengthen our fabric of belonging at the U. I encourage you to participate in an event in the coming weeks to reflect on our interdependence and open yourself to a new perspective on our community. Upcoming events include:

  • January 18: U Have a Dream at The Rock, sponsored by United Black Students
  • January 21: MLK Day of Service at The Rock, sponsored by United Black Students, Multicultural Student Affairs, and the Butler Center for Service and Leadership
  • January 23-27: Social Justice Week, sponsored by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership
  • January 30: Lunar New Year Celebration, sponsored by the Asian American Students Association, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, and Hong Kong Students Association

Thank you for your dedication to our community and for actively engaging in making our world a better place.

We are one U!
